If you’ve ever felt unexplained numbing sensations or tingling in your feet, hands, or other areas of your body, you may have been feeling nerve pain.

Nerve pain can be the result of central nervous system damage (brain and spinal cord), or unidentified issues in the nerves that run from those areas to the muscles and organs. Nerve pain also occurs as the result of a disease or injury.

What causes nerve pain?

Some common reasons for experiencing nerve pain are as follows:

  • Heavy consummation of alcohol
  • Brain injury or spinal cord injury
  • Restricted blood supply to the nerves
  • Vitamin B12 or B1 deficiency
  • Side effects from certain medications

Nerve pain does not only occur as the result of an external factor. There are many health conditions that can cause nerve pain as well, such as:

  • Shingles
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer, as well as radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Sciatica
  • Fibromyalgia

Types of nerve pain

According to Health Direct, there are different types of nerve pain, including:

  • “post-herpetic — this can happen after you’ve had shingles (herpes zoster) and affects the same area as the shingles rash
  • trigeminal— causing pain in the jaw or cheek
  • occipital — causing pain at the base of your skull that can spread to the back of your head
  • pudendal — causing pain in the ‘saddle area’ between the legs”

Symptoms of nerve pain

Everyone experiences nerve pain differently, however, many people complain of a “stabbing pain” felt in the middle of the night while they’re trying to sleep.

Chronic prickling, stinging, or burning may also occur during the day. Nerve pain can be extra debilitating if it’s left untreated, and make it downright difficult to go about your daily routine.

How Physical Therapy can help with nerve pain

Did you know that Physical Therapy goes beyond pain relief? It works to improve the overall function of your body by getting to the root of the problem.

This means that not only will your therapist treat your pain, but they will also work to figure out the source of it to minimize its occurrence in the future.

Physical Therapy is a natural, safe, and effective pain management solution for nerve pain, regardless of the reason behind it.

Our physical therapists will provide you with the treatments you need to reduce the feelings of numbness, prickles, and tingles you’ve been feeling.

Physical Therapy addresses nerve pain by improving your range of motion, strengthening the muscles in the affected areas, and using targeted massage to reduce tension.

Your Peninsula Physical Therapy & Associates, Inc. therapist may utilize manual therapy techniques to help relieve pressure on your nerves, and increase mobility of stiff joints and muscles.
